The African Youth Growth Foundation (AYGF) has raised the alarm over the outbreak of metal poisoning in Gaidan, Gidan Katta ward of Illela Local Government Area in Sokoto State.
AYGF Executive Director, Dr. Arome Salifu, in a statement yesterday, recalled that more than 10 years ago, there was a major public outcry and concerns raised about the prevalence of lead poison in Zamfara State especially with far-reaching consequences to lives.
According to Salifu, the Community Head, Gaidau Hayatu, told AYGF that the issue began four months ago, with children developing symptoms such as fever, abdominal swelling, vomiting, and headaches.
Also, the District head of Sabon Gari Gaidan, Ma Cv c fvgl. Mamman Musa, highlighted the severe impact of the poisoning, noting significant loss of life, including children and adults.
Salifu said: “To unravel the situation, AYGF went further to identify several critical infrastructure deficiencies contributing to the health crisis:
“Water Supply: The community lacks reliable and clean water, relying on potentially contaminated local wells.
“Sanitation: There is widespread open defecation, with no public toilets, even in schools, compromising hygiene.
Electricity: The absence of electricity affects food preservation and overall hygiene, exacerbating health risks.
“It is borne out of this that AYGF is calling out/raising a renewed campaign for an urgent National Action primarily to stamp out this challenge, increase access to health care services, and get help for the dozens of victims suffering.
“AYGF remains committed to working with the Gaidan community, relevant authorities, and partners to address these challenges, improve living conditions, and prevent further health crises.”
