The African Professionals of Australia (APA) has named Nigeria Minister of Mines and Solid Minerals, Dr. Dele Alake as the African Champion of the Year.

At the Australia-Africa Diaspora Investment Forum which was held alongside the Africa Down Under (ADU) Mining Conference  brought together prominent leaders and professionals from across Africa and the diaspora at the Pan Pacific, Perth on September 5, 2025 for an evening of engaging discussion and networking.

A major highlight was the presentation of the Certificate of Recognition and the 2025 African Professional Champion of the Year award to Dr Henry Dele Alake, Honourable Minister of Solid Minerals, Federal Republic of Nigeria. The award recognised Dr Alake’s outstanding contributions to Nigeria’s mining sector and his commitment to diaspora engagement.

The honour was presented by APA WA President Dr Toyosi Craig and APA Chairman Tommy Adebayo, with special guests Amb. Anwar Muktar and Amb. Dr Jane Adams, Consul General of Ethiopia and Nigeria, in attendance.

Dr Alake’s keynote address was delivered on his behalf by Mr Martin Imonite, MD/CEO of Nigeria Solid Minerals Company. The forum also featured a panel discussion on investment, business, expert recruitment, and opportunities across Africa.

Notable Nigerian delegates included Prof. Omoniyi Ige, Director General of the Nigeria Geological Survey Agency (NGSA); Prof. S.B. Hassan, DG & CEO of the Nigerian Institute of Mining and Geosciences (NIMG); and Prof. Ayeni, Special Adviser to the Minister on Marketing.

Dr Craig highlighted the Minister’s role in fostering technology and skill transfer between Australia and Africa as a key reason for his selection as the winner of the prestigious honour.

The evening concluded with a networking session, further strengthening Australia-Africa ties. Photos from the event showcased collaboration and achievement that defined the forum.
