Athletics is set to take centre stage on Day Four of the Akwa Ibom State trials for the second Niger Delta Games (NDG) as action continues today, February 2, 2026.
More than 100 athletes are expected to compete for selection when athletics events unfold in both morning and afternoon sessions at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo.
Key events lined up include the 100 metres, 200m, 400m, 800m, relay races and mixed relays, among others.
According to the official programme, the morning session will begin at 9 a.m. with the women’s 5,000 metres final and the men’s shot put final. This will be followed by the 100m heats for men and women, alongside various field events, and finals in the 400m, 1,500m, hurdles, jumps and throws. The session is scheduled to run through to 1:15 p.m., promising sustained excitement on both track and field.

The afternoon session will resume at 3 p.m. and feature finals in the javelin, discus, long jump, 200m, 800m and high jump. The men’s 5,000 metres final will bring the day’s athletics programme to a close at 6 p.m.
In other events, Kokowa (traditional wrestling) will take place at the Uyo Township Stadium by 11 a.m., while swimming has been moved to UltraFit Nigeria Limited, Ewet Housing Estate, Uyo, due to ongoing maintenance work at the Olympic-size swimming pool.
Members of the public have been encouraged to attend events at the various venues to support the athletes, as the trials remain open to spectators.
The Niger Delta Games, sponsored by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and organised by Dunamis-Icon Limited, will be held in Edo State from February 20 to 27, with all nine states in the Niger Delta region expected to participate.
