A Nigerian Wushu-Kungfu athlete, Adewale Adebayo, has called for a coordinated and strategic approach to enhance martial arts development across the country.

Adebayo made this appeal during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos.

He urged stakeholders to implement key initiatives designed to raise the sport’s standards and boost its global competitiveness.

NAN reports that Wushu-Kungfu is a modern and traditional Chinese martial art that blends performance with combat techniques.

The word ‘Wushu’ means ‘martial arts’ in Chinese, while ‘Kungfu’ refers to skill attained through hard work and consistent practice.

Wushu-Kungfu is practised globally as both a competitive sport and a cultural discipline, governed by the International Wushu Federation (IWUF).

Adebayo outlined strategies to reposition Wushu-Kungfu as a leading martial art in Nigeria.

He suggested that holding regular national championships would greatly benefit local athletes.

“Quarterly championships would motivate athletes to train harder and improve readiness for international contests,” he said.

The athlete also stressed the importance of infrastructure development for sustained progress.

He said establishing training centres nationwide would give athletes consistent access to quality facilities.

“The Federation’s centre at Fun Factory, Lagos, is commendable. Replicating such facilities across Nigeria will support talent growth,” he stated.

He further called for stronger private sector involvement through sponsorship and training support.

“Corporate backing can transform the sport by funding competitions and development initiatives, raising performance levels,” he said.

To secure the sport’s future, Adebayo urged the introduction of Wushu-Kungfu in schools and local communities.

“Young talent can be discovered early through grassroots programmes, ensuring long-term success,” he said.

He also proposed forming a dedicated team for publicity and sponsorship efforts.

“A focused media and sponsorship team can greatly improve visibility and funding for Wushu-Kungfu,” he added.

Emphasising global collaboration, Adebayo encouraged partnerships with international bodies, including China’s Consulate General.

He also stressed the need for quality coaching and exposure to elite training.

“Our athletes require world-class coaching aligned with international standards to truly excel,” he said.
