Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan and other Nigerians have been omitted from the finalists for the Men’s and Women’s World Athlete of the Year.
On July 16, 2023, Amusan clocked a new season best of 12.34 seconds in the 100m Hurdles at the Silesia Diamond league meet. Three days later, she was charged with missing three anti-doping controls and was given a provisional suspension from participation.
At the 2023 World Championships held in Budapest, she finished sixth in the final held on 24 August.
The 10 athletes, who represent four countries each from four area associations, have achieved sensational performances across a range of athletics disciplines in 2023, winning titles and breaking world records at the World Athletics Championships Budapest 23, one-day meeting circuits, Label road races and other events around the world.
The women nominees are Tigist Assefa of Ethiopia, Femke Bol of Netherlands, Shericka Jackson of Jamaica, Faith Kipyegon of Kenya and Yulimar Rojas of Venezuela while the nominees for the men’s title are Neeraj Chopra of Indonesia, Ryan Crouser of USA, Mondo Duplantis of Sweden, Kelvin Kiptum of Kenya and Noah Lyles of USA.
The World Athletes of the Year will be announced on World Athletics’ platforms on December 11, as part of the World Athletics Awards 2023.
