Says four cardinal demands unmet
Academic activities have been grounded at the Cross River University of Education and Entrepreneurship, Akamkpa, as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU-UEE) Branch commenced a 14-day industrial action.
The strike, which began on September 10, 2026, follows the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the university management and relevant government authorities.
In a statement signed by the Branch Chairperson, Comrade Valentine Ntui, Ph.D., and Secretary, Comrade Imoke Etorti, Ph.D., the union said none of its four cardinal demands had received substantive attention or resolution.
The demands include the correction of CONUASS implementation and payment of outstanding salary arrears; implementation of the 2025 FGN-ASUU Agreement, specifically the CATA component; implementation of the harmonised 70-year retirement age for Professors and Associate Professors; and urgent intervention to address excessive workload and the critical shortage of academic staff.
“Following the resolution of the Emergency NEC of ASUU held on 5th September 2026, and the Emergency Congress of ASUU-UEE Akamkpa Branch held on 9th September 2026, the Branch hereby declares a fourteen-day industrial action,” the statement read.

The union directed all members to “withdraw their services fully and faithfully observe the industrial action throughout its duration, pending meaningful and satisfactory resolution of the issues in dispute.”
Dr Ntui said the decision was not taken lightly, but the branch remained committed to dialogue and constructive engagement.
“We urge all members to remain united, disciplined and resolute as we collectively defend the dignity of our profession, the welfare of our members and the integrity of the University system,” he added.
Hundreds of students at the Akamkpa-based institution, which is a newly established state university, will be affected by the shutdown.
