In recognition of World Cancer Day 2025, AstraZeneca has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing early detection, innovative treatments, and holistic patient care under this year’s theme, “United by Unique.”
The theme emphasizes patient-centered care, innovative approaches to improving outcomes, and the power of collaboration in the fight against cancer. This comes as the World Health Organization (WHO) warned that cancer mortality in sub-Saharan Africa could nearly double by 2030, driven by delayed diagnoses and limited access to care.
Cancer remains one of the leading causes of death globally, with sub-Saharan Africa facing particularly severe challenges. The region’s healthcare systems often struggle with inadequate infrastructure, limited diagnostic capabilities, and a shortage of skilled oncology professionals. AstraZeneca, a global biopharmaceutical company with a strong focus on oncology, is working to address these gaps through targeted initiatives aimed at improving early detection, patient advocacy, and equitable access to advanced treatments.
Deepak Arora, African Cluster Country President at AstraZeneca, highlighted the company’s mission: “Our goal is to bridge the gap in cancer care. By improving access to diagnostics and treatments, we aim to transform the landscape of cancer outcomes on the continent. Early detection plays a critical role in improving survival rates, and we remain committed to supporting initiatives that make a meaningful difference for patients.”
One such initiative is the *Connect to Care* program, developed in collaboration with Axios International and key medical associations. This program fosters multidisciplinary collaboration to accelerate lung cancer diagnosis and improve patient outcomes. AstraZeneca is also enhancing molecular testing infrastructure in Nigeria and Kenya, partnering with institutions like Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) and Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Health to introduce advanced diagnostics, including EGFR testing for lung cancer.
In South Africa, AstraZeneca has partnered with Medsol AI Solutions to launch *Project Flamingo*, an AI-driven healthcare innovation designed to improve early breast cancer detection in underserved communities. The AI-powered app, which has demonstrated 97.6% accuracy in predicting malignancies, enables real-time breast ultrasound scans and predictive analysis, easing pressure on public health systems.
Dr. Khomotso Mashilane, Medical Director at AstraZeneca, emphasized the importance of innovation in oncology care: “We are committed to advancing early detection and precision diagnostics through cutting-edge technologies and patient-centered solutions. By fostering meaningful partnerships, we aim to empower patients and healthcare providers to improve outcomes and enhance quality of life.”
AstraZeneca’s *Cancer Care Africa* program, launched in Kenya with partners including the Ministry of Health, KESHO, Axios, and the National Cancer Institute (NCI), underscores the company’s commitment to holistic and equitable healthcare. The initiative focuses on strengthening capacity, enhancing diagnostics, empowering patients, and improving access to advanced cancer treatments.
The company is also supporting the availability of diagnostic tools, such as ultrasound biopsy machines for prostate cancer and biomarker testing technology for lung cancer. Additionally, AstraZeneca is investing in training healthcare professionals to build a more skilled oncology workforce capable of addressing Africa’s growing cancer burden.
As World Cancer Day 2025 highlighted the uniqueness of every individual’s cancer journey, AstraZeneca’s people-centric approach aligns with the global call for unity in enhancing care. By prioritizing early detection, advanced therapies, and equitable healthcare, the company is fostering collaboration and driving meaningful progress in oncology, offering hope and transformative outcomes for patients across the continent.
