From Tony Osauzo, Benin
A Benin-based legal practitioner, Daniel Osa-Ogbegie, has condemned what he described as attacks by Niger Delta activist, Asari Dokubo, against the late Captain Idahosa Wells Okunbo, popularly known as Captain Hosa, and his son, Osahon Idahosa Okunbo.
Osa-Ogbegie, in a statement issued on Tuesday in reaction to a viral video by Dokubo, described the remarks against the Okunbo family as unwarranted, saying the late businessman was an accomplished aviator, entrepreneur and philanthropist who contributed significantly to Nigeria’s economic development.
The lawyer said Captain Hosa built his reputation through “intellect, strategic vision, entrepreneurial discipline and hard work”, creating legitimate businesses, employment opportunities and value across the country. He said the late businessman’s legacy should not be diminished by what he described as unsubstantiated comments, stressing that his achievements in aviation, maritime business, oil and gas and philanthropy were products of enterprise and years of hard work.
Osa-Ogbegie also defended Osahon Idahosa Okunbo, saying he had demonstrated maturity and competence in managing aspects of the family’s business interests since the death of his father.
He said Osahon’s efforts deserved recognition rather than being dragged into controversies arising from unrelated political or personal disagreements.
“Osahon Idahosa Okunbo has stepped into his late father’s shoes with remarkable maturity, poise and competence. He is building on the foundation laid by Captain Hosa and continues to contribute to the development of the private sector,” he stated.
The legal practitioner urged Nigerians to distinguish between legitimate criticism and what he described as attempts to disparage individuals and families who have contributed to society through lawful enterprise. He said the memory of Captain Hosa should be protected from statements capable of undermining the legacy he built during his lifetime.
Osa-Ogbegie, Lead Counsel at Noah Attorneys, also urged Dokubo to channel his concerns and grievances through appropriate platforms rather than targeting the Okunbo family.
He stressed that Edo people would continue to defend the legacies of sons and daughters who had contributed positively to the development of the state and the country.
