The Asaga (Ohafia) Youths Association (AYA) has honoured General Counsel and Company Secretary of The Sun Publishing Limited, Obinna Kalu Onugu, with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to community development and service to Asaga Ohafia.
The award was presented to Onugu on the sidelines of the 2026 Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Annual General Conference in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
Presenting the award on behalf of the AYA National Executive Committee were the association’s Second National Vice President, Ada Okwara Eni; former National Publicity Secretary and current Assistant National Secretary-General of the Asaga Ohafia Development Union (ADU), Ifeanyichukwu Awa Oburu; and other members of the association.
AYA said the recognition was in appreciation of Onugu’s years of service, leadership and contributions to the development of Asaga Ohafia, as well as his accomplishments in the legal profession.
Onugu, an international corporate legal practitioner, serves as General Counsel and Company Secretary of The Sun Publishing Limited.
He is also a member of the Board of Sun Heaven Hotels and Resort Limited and Board of Trustees of The Sun Media Development Foundation.
Beyond his professional engagements, Onugu is Secretary-General of the Asaga Ohafia Development Union and Chairman, Board of Trustees of Child Help Foundation, in addition to other professional and community responsibilities.
Speaking before the presentation, Eni said AYA considered it important to recognise individuals whose professional accomplishments and community engagements had positively impacted Asaga Ohafia.
She said the award was also intended to encourage younger generations to embrace service, responsibility, leadership and commitment to community development.
Eni described Onugu as a worthy recipient whose professional achievements and service to his community had distinguished him.
She said the Lifetime Achievement Award represented the appreciation of Asaga youths for his contributions to the growth and advancement of the community.
The association expressed the hope that the recognition would further inspire him to deploy his experience, influence and resources towards the development of Asaga Ohafia and its people.
Receiving the award, Onugu expressed gratitude to the leadership and members of AYA, saying the recognition was particularly significant because it came from his community.
“This recognition means a great deal to me—not merely because it bears the words Lifetime Achievement, but because it comes from my own people and community,” he said.
Onugu described the award as a reminder that dedicated service could have enduring impact and that genuine contributions to society would ultimately be recognised.
“I receive this honour with profound gratitude and humility. It is a reminder that service leaves footprints, and genuine contributions never go unnoticed,” he said.
He thanked the leadership and members of AYA Worldwide for the recognition and pledged to remain committed to community service.
“The honour is appreciated. The responsibility is renewed. The journey continues,” Onugu said.
