Director of Communications, Catholic Diocese of Issele-Uku, Rev Fr. Charles Uganwa, will be celebrating his 30 years of ecclesiastical service in the priesthood.

Ahead of his celebration, he spoke with some journalists, where he spoke about his three decades of priesthood, challenges, triumphs and the gospel of Jesus Christ in Nigeria.

Could you please tell us about your growing up and things that shaped your life?

Growing up in the early sixties, my family emphasised the importance of honour and dignity. My father’s words, “remember the child of whom you are,” instilled a deep sense of responsibility and respect. This upbringing, combined with a strong sense of self-worth and commitment, helped me to grow into someone who could confidently answer God’s call to the priesthood.

How did your days at the seminary prepare you for your priestly duties?

During my seminary years, I did my very best to prepare for the priesthood. At the seminary, I was honoured to be a FIFA-graded referee and was recognised as the best writer of the year in 1990. These achievements, especially in writing, laid a foundation for my future contributions to Catholic journalism and scholarship. They also reinforced my commitment to academic excellence and pastoral work.

Before becoming a priest, you had a diverse career. You worked as a media professional at NTA and a banker at African Continental Bank. How did these experiences impact on your priestly vocation?

My work at NTA and African Continental Bank provided me with valuable life experiences and skills. These roles taught me discipline, professionalism, and the importance of communication. These experiences helped me transition smoothly into the priesthood, allowing me to engage with people from various walks of life and to utilise these skills in my ministry.

You hold multiple postgraduate degrees and have authored numerous publications. How do these academic and professional pursuits complement your role as a priest?

My academic pursuits in pastoral communication, education, and journalism complement my role as a priest by enhancing my ability to communicate effectively and to engage in intellectual discourse. They have equipped me with the knowledge and skills to contribute meaningfully to both the church and the wider community through writing and scholarship.

How has your international experience, including your mission in the UK, influenced your approach to pastoral care and leadership?

My international experiences, particularly my time in the UK as an associate pastor, broadened my perspective and enriched my approach to pastoral care. Working in diverse cultural settings helped me understand and appreciate the universal nature of the church, allowing me to connect with people from various backgrounds more effectively.

You have been in the priesthood for 30 years. How has the Holy Eucharist played a role in sustaining you throughout your ministry?

Since my priestly ordination, the Holy Eucharist has been my sustaining force, providing me with both spiritual and physical energy. It has been a source of motivation to continue my journey despite the various challenges faced in the ministry. The Eucharist renews my commitment and strengthens my resolve to serve God and His people.

How do you balance your extensive responsibilities as Director of Communication, editor of The Catholic Beacon, military chaplain, and other roles?

Balancing these responsibilities requires a strong sense of organisation, discipline, and time management. My commitment to each role is driven by a deep passion for service and a desire to make a positive impact. I rely on efficient scheduling and the support of my colleagues and collaborators to manage my various responsibilities effectively.

You are known for your commitment to justice and truth. How do you incorporate these values into your daily ministry and writing?

My commitment to justice and truth is reflected in my ministry and writing through a dedication to honesty, fairness, and integrity. In my homilies and articles, I strive to address issues with transparency and to advocate for the common good. My goal is to inspire others to live with moral conviction and to seek justice in all aspects of life.

How has your engagement with the youth through social media and other platforms influenced your ministry?

Engaging with the youth through social media and other platforms allows me to connect with them in their natural environments. It provides an opportunity to offer guidance, share insights, and address their concerns in a relevant and accessible manner. This engagement helps bridge generational gaps and fosters a deeper connection with the younger generation.

Looking back on your 30 years as a priest, what are you most grateful for, and what are your hopes for the future?

I am deeply grateful for the support of God, my family, and my colleagues throughout my priestly journey. Their encouragement has been vital to my ministry. Looking ahead, I hope to continue making a positive impact through my work, to inspire others to follow their vocations with dedication, and to contribute to the growth and unity of the church and society.
