Arsenal have agreed to sign Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad for a fee that could rise to €38.5 million.

The Gunners will pay the 28-year-old an initial €33.5 million, with the option for an additional €5 million. This makes him Mikel Arteta’s third major acquisition of the summer.

Merino joins goalkeeper David Raya and centre-back Riccardo Calafiori as new additions to the Emirates Stadium.

During his tenure with Real Sociedad, Merino has established himself as one of La Liga’s best midfielders, and he was instrumental in the team’s Champions League qualifying the previous season. He was named to the La Liga Team of the Season for 2022–2023 as a result of his efforts.

The midfielder also tasted international success this summer, scoring the winning goal for Spain in their Euro 2024 quarter-final victory over Germany.

This move marks a return to English football for Merino, who previously had a brief spell at Newcastle United during the 2017/18 season.
