FIFA has launched disciplinary proceedings against Argentina following the post-match brawl that overshadowed the end of the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, with several players and the Argentine Football Association facing possible sanctions.
The investigation follows Argentina’s 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain on Sunday, when celebrations by the new world champions descended into chaos after the final whistle.
Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes was sent off after the match for his involvement in the confrontation, while defender Nahuel Molina is also under scrutiny after appearing to swing at Spain captain Rodri during the melee.
FIFA’s independent Disciplinary Committee said it would review the referee’s report, video footage and all relevant evidence before deciding whether further disciplinary action is necessary.
The governing body is also assessing incidents that occurred after Argentina’s semi-final victory over England, when several players displayed a banner reading, “Las Malvinas son Argentinas”, reaffirming Argentina’s claim over the Falkland Islands.
After that match, FIFA confirmed that its disciplinary committee was reviewing the circumstances in line with the FIFA Disciplinary Code. The same process has now been extended to the events that unfolded after the World Cup final.
Paredes and Enzo Fernández, who was dismissed during regulation time after receiving a second yellow card, will automatically miss Argentina’s next competitive fixture.
However, FIFA regulations provide for harsher punishment where violent conduct is established. Players found guilty of offences such as punching, kicking or striking an opponent can receive a minimum three-match suspension, while retrospective sanctions may also be imposed.
Argentina’s football federation could also face disciplinary measures if FIFA determines that the conduct of the players or team officials breached its regulations or brought the game into disrepute.
The confrontation began moments after Spain secured their second World Cup title. Molina appeared to react angrily after Spain’s Mikel Oyarzabal and Rodri celebrated near him, prompting Eric García to intervene.
Paredes then entered the fracas, pushing García to the ground before appearing to strike him in the throat. Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni attempted to restore order, while footage also appeared to show assistant coach Daniel Ayala striking Spain midfielder Dani Olmo.
The incident brought an acrimonious end to Argentina’s campaign and Lionel Messi’s expected final World Cup appearance. FIFA is expected to announce its disciplinary decision after completing its review.
