The Arewa Youth Assembly (AYA) has celebrated renowned Anambra-born academic, Professor Benjamin Chukwuma Ozumba, on the occasion of his 72nd birthday, describing him as a detribalised Nigerian and a symbol of unity, scholarship and national development.
Speaker, AYA, Comrade Mohammed Salihu Danlami, in a congratulatory message on Friday, joined Nigerians across academic, medical and professional circles in honouring Ozumba, who turns 72 on March 21.
He noted that the former Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, has built a legacy that transcends titles, marked by his commitment to human capital development and nation building.
Born on March 21, 1954, in Abba, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, Ozumba’s journey from Government College Umuahia to global academic and medical recognition reflected years of discipline, scholarship and service.
The Assembly highlighted his extensive training, including his MBBS from the University of Lagos in 1979 and further professional exposure at the Harvard School of Public Health and Crawley Hospital in England.
A specialist in Feto Maternal Medicine, Ozumba joined the University of Nigeria in 1988 and became a professor in 1993, with over 65 scholarly publications to his credit in maternal health, reproductive medicine and gynaecological oncology.
The group, however, emphasised that his most visible impact came during his tenure as the 14th Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria between 2014 and 2019, where he led transformative initiatives.
“These include the establishment of Lion Laptops, Lion Science Park, Roar Nigeria Hub, and the production of Nigeria’s first university-made electric vehicle, Lion Ozumba 5531,” Danlami noted.
