Arewa Think Tank has urged the Federal Government to release INEC’s outstanding budgetary allocations for the 2027 general elections, saying timely funding is essential to credible polls.
The group’s convener, Muhammad Alhaji Yakubu, in a statement on Wednesday, commended INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, for highlighting the commission’s financial needs, noting that the elections would require effective logistics, modern technology, adequate materials and security.
“INEC should not be allowed to struggle for funds while preparing for an election as important and complex as the 2027 general elections. Timely funding is not a favour to INEC; it is an investment in the credibility and stability of our democracy,” he said.
Yakubu said INEC had completed nine of the 14 critical statutory milestones in its revised timetable and needed the outstanding funds to execute the remaining stages without delays or disruptions.
“Elections are too important to be left to last-minute arrangements. The earlier INEC receives the funds appropriated to it, the better positioned the commission will be to plan, procure, test and deploy the necessary infrastructure for the elections,” he said.
He urged INEC to uphold transparency, accountability and strict adherence to the law, while calling on political parties, civil society organisations, the media and other stakeholders to cooperate towards peaceful and credible elections.
