The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Most Rev. Alfred Adewale Martins, has called on Nigerians to embody the spirit of brotherly love, unity, and selfless sacrifice exemplified by the Easter event. In his 2024 Easter message, Archbishop Martins emphasised the importance of those virtues in fostering peaceful coexistence amid economic and security challenges in the country.
In his message, delivered through the Director of Social Communications, Very Rev. Fr. Anthony Godonu, Archbishop Martins underscored the significance of reflecting on the love of God demonstrated through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. He urged Nigerians, regardless of tribe or faith, to embrace love and empathy, particularly during these challenging times of economic hardship and social dysfunction.
Easter, according to him, is a time for Christians to commemorate the resurrection of Christ and unite with Him by serving others, especially those in need. He emphasised the core message of the Christian faith, including Christ’s death, resurrection, and imminent return, urging believers to live out the virtues of sacrifice and love exemplified by Jesus.
The Archbishop also condemned the recent tragic killing of 17 Nigerian Army personnel in Okuama community of Delta State, calling for swift justice for the victims. He urged the federal and state governments to ensure that those responsible for the dastardly act faced the full consequences of their actions.
He encouraged the army to exercise restraint and uphold the rule of law as it responds to provocations.
In a gesture of recognition and support for the fallen soldiers, Archbishop Martins commended the decision to confer posthumous national honours and provide scholarships for their children. He expressed hope that such measures would offer some solace to the families of the deceased and facilitate the education of their offsprings.
