Residents of Araromi Ale in Olorunda Local Council Development Area of Badagry, Lagos State have commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for wading in to halt the demolition exercise being carried out by officials of Landed Properties Special Operations Team, in conjunction with Garba Owoeye and his associates.
The exercise left over 200 properties destroyed, while over 500 people were rendered homeless before the governor halted the operation and disbanded the team.
In a statement, Mr Kodi Iweka, who spoke on behalf of the community, said those who carried out the demolition exercise acted like militia. “When you see the way they entered the community with over 200 armed personnel, including policemen from Zone 2, armed thugs and bulldozers, you would think it was militants’ invasions. In hours, homes were reduced to rubbles and property owners prevented from salvaging their belongings from the ruins.
“Immediately any building collapsed, the thugs moved in and carted away all the valuables in the structure. Whatever survived the bulldozer becomes their spoils of war,” he said.
While appealing to the governor to assist those who lost their belongings to the exercise, he said humanitarian disaster is almost happening in the area as many people have been rendered homeless without food to eat.
Mr Iweka also appealed to the governor to approve permanent police posts in the area, to safeguard life and property of residents.
