The Allied Peoples Movement (APM) Oyo Central senatorial candidate, Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, has called on residents of Oyo State to adopt environmentally responsible practices to combat climate change and promote sustainable living.

He made the appeal in a statement on Friday to commemorate the 2026 World Environment Day.

He warned that failure to embrace eco-friendly habits could worsen climate change and expose communities to avoidable disasters.

He urged residents to prioritise proper waste disposal, avoid blocking drainage channels, plant more trees and reduce pollution, especially amid forecasts of heavy rainfall across the country this year.

According to him, this year’s World Environment Day with the theme, ‘Climate Action’, underscored the urgent need for individuals, communities, institutions and governments to take decisive steps to tackle the growing threats posed by climate change.

Ajadi stressed that meteorological predictions of heavy rains should serve as a wake-up call for residents to adopt preventive measures, capable of reducing flooding and environmental degradation.

“I urge my constituents to adopt sustainable habits, such as proper waste disposal, tree planting, reduction of pollution and promotion of cleaner, greener environments,” he said.

He warned citizens against ignoring the dangers associated with climate change, noting that environmental sustainability has become a collective responsibility requiring immediate action.

Ajadi added that preserving the environment remains crucial to improving public health, ensuring food security, protecting biodiversity and securing a sustainable future for generations unborn.

He further called on political leaders, traditional institutions, religious organisations, youth groups, schools, market associations and community leaders to intensify awareness campaigns and champion practices that would mitigate the impact of climate change in Oyo State.

World Environment Day, established by the United Nations in 1972, is observed annually on June 5 to promote environmental awareness and action globally.

The 2026 edition is being hosted by Azerbaijan and focuses on climate action and humanity’s response to environmental challenges.
