The All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticised former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi over his reported claim that he could not afford the medication needed to treat his late mother.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, October 4, 2026, and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the ruling party questioned Amaechi’s ability to manage his personal affairs outside public office.
The APC began by expressing condolences to Amaechi over the death of his mother, Dame Ezinne Mary Oduah Amaechi, while praying for her repose and wishing the former minister good health.
However, the party subsequently ridiculed the former Minister of Transportation over his reported financial difficulties, suggesting that he should seek employment in his hometown of Ubima, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.
“It is our sincere wish that employers of labour in his hometown of Ubima in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State may find him suitable for a job that pays wages sufficient for him to feed and buy medications for himself and his beloved family for the rest of his retirement,” the APC said.
The ruling party also referred to what it described as Amaechi’s “uncanny confessions”, alleging that he had previously complained about being broke and depending on his wife for financial support.
“First, he howled that he had become so broke and hungry that his wife was now feeding him. Now, he has stated that his inability to afford medications killed his mother at 89,” the statement read.
Amaechi, who served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly for two terms, governor of the state for two terms and Minister of Transportation, was also a presidential aspirant before becoming the African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate.
The APC argued that his reported financial struggles after leaving public office raised questions about his ability to sustain himself and his family without government appointments.

“For four decades, Rotimi Amaechi freeloaded at the highest levels of public office. He was never hungry and could afford medications for himself and his family,” the party alleged.
It added: “Just three years out of office, he has become destitute, unable to fend for himself and his loved ones.”
The party further questioned Amaechi’s bid to become vice-president in the 2027 general election, accusing him of seeking a return to public office to continue benefiting from government resources.
“The same Rotimi Amaechi now asks Nigerians to make him vice president come 2027 so he can continue leeching on the public treasury and keep the predatory lifestyle he has grown accustomed to,” the APC said.
The ruling party maintained that the country’s highest political offices should not be used to address the personal financial difficulties of political officeholders.
“The presidency is not a soup kitchen and will not be a soup kitchen for Rotimi Amaechi,” the statement added.
The APC concluded by arguing that Amaechi’s reported remarks about his financial circumstances undermined his suitability for the vice-presidential position.
“No one can speak more to Rotimi Amaechi’s unfitness for the office of Vice President than Rotimi Amaechi himself,” the party said.
