The chances of the All Progressives Congress (APC) going into next year’s general elections as a united house appear threatened following the fresh crisis rocking the party’s Committee of Diaspora Chairmen (CDC) after the removal of its chairman, Doherty Tunde, by an Abuja High Court, which nullified his election.
The decision was taken during an extraordinary meeting of the CDC Executive Committee held via WhatsApp recently.
Members said the action was necessary to comply with an order of the High Court of the FCT, Abuja, sitting in Maitama, which declared the election that produced Doherty as APC UK chapter chairman null and void.
Doherty had held the CDC chairmanship by virtue of his position as UK chapter chairman. The committee resolved that he should step aside immediately to avoid any risk of contempt of court.
A motion to that effect was moved by Charles Michelletti, APC Ghana chairman and CDC treasurer, and seconded by Hon. Igwe Ibezim, APC Italy chairman and CDC financial secretary, calling for Doherty to vacate the CDC seat pending the final determination of the case.

They agreed that the Deputy Chairman, Apostle David Abraham, who also chairs the APC South Korea chapter, should take over as acting chairman following the motion, which was passed by four votes to one. Those in favour were Michelletti, Ibezim, Hon. Elas Abone (APC Canada) and Abraham. Hon. Steven Tella (APC Spain) voted against, while Hon. Hammed Adefioye (APC Ireland) was absent.
According to the resolutions adopted, Abraham, who assumes office with immediate effect and all the powers of the chairmanship, is required to set up an election committee to organise fresh polls in September 2026, ahead of the current executive’s term ending in December, and to publish the election guidelines within seven days.
The resolution takes effect immediately.
The CDC executive now lists Abraham as acting chairman, with Doherty recorded as former chairman of both the UK chapter and the diaspora body.
