APC convention: Governors, delegates converge on Abuja

President Bola Tinubu, 32 state governors and over 8,000 delegates have begun converging on Abuja for the national convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC), setting the stage for a major leadership transition within the ruling party.

The convention, scheduled to hold at Eagle Square, is expected to attract party stakeholders from across all levels, with new members of the National Working Committee set to emerge.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said the gathering would serve as both a decision-making forum and a moment to consolidate the party’s direction under the “Renewed Hope” agenda.

He noted that over 8,400 accredited delegates from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory would participate in the exercise, which is designed to align party structures with the administration’s policy direction.

Despite assurances of a smooth process, concerns have emerged over alleged exclusions from the contest, with some aggrieved members raising objections through internal party channels rather than seeking court intervention.

Meanwhile, heightened activity across the capital has reflected the scale of the event, as hotels reached full capacity and security measures intensified, prompting the federal government to direct civil servants in affected areas to work remotely.

Party leaders, however, expressed confidence that the convention would proceed without disruption, describing it as a crucial step in strengthening internal cohesion ahead of the 2027 general elections.
