A group of chieftains of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Borno South Senatorial District has called for the rotation of the National Assembly seat among units in the zone.
A former Deputy Speaker of the state House of Assembly in the Third Republic, Sule Musa, who spoke for the group, told journalists in Maiduguri that rotation of power in the zone would promote harmony among the people.
“The seat was never meant to be a permanent inheritance. We started this journey with the spirit of fairness, but that spirit has stalled,” he lamented.
Musa, who said they are committed to rotation for equity, noted that such an arrangement would foster inclusiveness in politics. He added that the group is urging APC leadership in the state to zone the Borno South Senatorial District seat to Askira-Uba Local Government to allow the incumbent Deputy Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, Abdullahi Musa Askira, to contest in the 2027 elections. Also speaking in the same vein, Special Adviser to Governor Babagana Zulum on Women Affairs, Dr. Hawa Mai-Musa, said rotation of the senatorial seat would bring harmony and peace to the area. She noted that allowing a single unit to produce a senator for over two decades could create a sense of marginalisation.
“Gwoza (Local Government) has held this for 20 years. For the sake of harmony, it is time for Askira/Uba and Chibok to breathe,” she said.
