Kano State House of Assembly has resolved to recall the State Emirate Council Law 2019 and the Kano State Emirate Amendment Law 2023 for possible amendment.

The resolution to review the law followed a motion of public interest initiated by the Majority Leader of the House, Lawan Gurasa, during yesterday’s plenary.

At the plenary, the majority leader sought the approval of the lawmakers to call back the old law for amendment.

On his part, a member of the House representing Dawakin Kudu constituency, Shu’aibu Rabi’u, seconded the motion.

The law was first amended in 2019 amidst tension between the then governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, and Emir Muhammaºdu Sanusi.

The amendment led to the fragmentation of Kano Emirate Council into five distinct emirates, namely Rano, Karaye, Gaya, and Bichi, as well as the appointment of first class emirs for the newly established councils.

It also subtly paved the way for the deposition of Sanusi as the emir of Kano.

Daily Sun recalls that with the victory of Abba Yusuf as the governor of Kano State, there have been spirited efforts by the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and some interests to restore the old Council Emirate Council Law.

A former governor of the state and leader of NNPP, Rabiu Kwankwaso, had recently indicated that the issue of Kano emirates would be revisited.
