Anambra State Commissioner for Power and Water Resources Julius Mmelikam Chukwuemeka has revealed that the state plans to domesticate power generation by 2025, following the successful passing of the Anambra State Electricity Bill currently before the House of Assembly.
Chukwuemeka disclosed this while addressing the press after the Ministry’s 2025 budget defence at the State Assembly Complex in Awka.
He noted that the 2023 Electricity Amendment Act, which empowers states to legislate on electricity matters, has paved the way for the Soludo administration to proceed with plans for the domestication of power generation.
The Commissioner explained that once the bill is passed, the state will establish the Electricity Management Agency and other regulatory bodies to oversee power management and regulation. This initiative is expected to lead to improved power supply across Anambra State.
According to Chukwuemeka, the power sector will focus on extending electricity to various industries and communities in the state. He highlighted the development of the Anambra Mixed-Use Industrial City, a significant industrial cluster, as a key project requiring reliable and affordable power supply to attract investors.
He further stated that the ministry will continue to utilise renewable energy sources, such as solar power, to energise key government infrastructure, illuminate streets, and power communities in 2025.
On water resources, Chukwuemeka assured that the ministry would build on its achievements, ensuring the Anambra State Urban Water Asset Holdings Corporation continues to deliver clean and potable water supply. Driven by solar energy, the corporation aims to reach areas still without water access.
The Commissioner noted that under the Soludo administration, pipe-borne water supply has been restored in several major cities during the first phase of the Statewide Water Resuscitation Project. He added that the second phase, as captured in the 2025 budget, will extend water supply to additional cities and towns across the state.
