Senator Emmanuel C. Nwachukwu, representing Anambra South Senatorial District, has rendered an account of his first year in the Senh ate, highlighting his legislative interventions, advocacy for electronic transmission of election results, infrastructure development, youth employment and emergency relief for disaster victims.
Nwachukwu, who took the oath of office on October 8, 2025, following a by-election in August of the same year, said his first year in the 10th Senate had been defined by service, responsibility and a commitment to representing the interests of his constituents.
In a special address marking his first anniversary in office, the senator who’s currently vying for Re-election in the forthcoming 2027 general elections reflected on the circumstances surrounding his emergence, noting that he assumed office following the death of his predecessor, Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, while also facing legal challenges over his mandate.
Despite the legal proceedings, Nwachukwu who represents the senatorial district under the platform of the state’s ruling All Progressive Grand Alliance ( APGA ) reaffirmed his commitment towards addressing the pressing needs of his constituents.
“Our roads did not stop deteriorating because of tribunal proceedings. Erosion did not stop swallowing our lands. Our markets and industries in Nnewi and beyond did not stop suffering power outages. Our young graduates did not stop needing job security. Therefore, while legal teams worked in court, I went to work for you in Parliament,” he said.
The senator described the statement as a reflection of his commitment to ensuring that governance and constituency representation continued despite the challenges surrounding his assumption of office.
On electoral reform, Nwachukwu highlighted his participation in the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters and his position during deliberations on amendments to the Electoral Act.
He said he was among 15 senators who voted against manual fallbacks and in favour of mandatory real-time electronic transmission of election results, describing electoral integrity as a key component of democratic accountability.
On infrastructure, the senator cited his sponsorship of a motion drawing the attention of the Senate to the collapsed bridge and deteriorated sections of the Okija Spur – Ihembosi – Ukpor – Ebenator – Ezinifite Road corridor.
According to him, the intervention secured Senate resolutions directing the Federal Ministry of Works and the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to undertake urgent engineering interventions along the affected route.
Nwachukwu also disclosed that he had engaged the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and other federal power authorities over Right-of-Way challenges in Nnobi and efforts to accelerate the completion of the Nnewi Injection Substation.
He said the engagements were aimed at addressing electricity supply challenges affecting communities, businesses and industrial activities in Anambra South, particularly the commercial hub of Nnewi.
On environmental challenges, the senator said he had engaged the Ecological Fund Office and the Federal Ministry of Environment over gully erosion threatening homes and farmlands across Aguata, Orumba, Ihiala and neighbouring communities.
He added that he had drawn the attention of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to victims of a building collapse in Oko, Orumba North Local Government Area.
The senator further highlighted his collaboration with NEMA and the Nigerian Red Cross in securing and distributing relief materials to victims of fire outbreaks, including affected families in Ozubulu.
On youth development, Nwachukwu said he was facilitating federal employment opportunities for qualified young people from the district across ministries, departments and agencies, with the objective of improving access to stable employment and career opportunities in the public service.
He also announced that the first phase of installing more than 3,000 solar-powered streetlights across Anambra South was underway, describing the initiative as part of his ongoing constituency interventions.
The lawmaker said he had maintained consultations with traditional rulers, presidents-general, youth organisations, women’s groups and other stakeholders across the seven local government areas that make up the senatorial district: Aguata, Orumba North, Orumba South, Ihiala, Nnewi North, Nnewi South and Ekwusigo.
He added that his engagement extended to Anambra South indigenes living in Lagos and other parts of Nigeria, with the aim of sustaining communication between his office and constituents.
On political and institutional collaboration, Nwachukwu said he had established a working relationship between members of the National Assembly caucus and Anambra State Governor, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, to promote coordination between state development priorities and federal interventions.
He also said he retained the administrative secretary of the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah upon assuming office, explaining that the decision was intended to preserve institutional memory, honour existing commitments and ensure uninterrupted constituency services.
Looking ahead, Nwachukwu said his first year in office should be regarded as the beginning of a longer journey rather than a final destination.
“I do not present this first year as a final destination, but as the firm foundation of the journey ahead. Continuity is not a reward for perfection, it is an opportunity to consolidate what we have started, improve where necessary and complete what remains unfinished,” he said.
The senator expressed appreciation to Governor Soludo, the leadership and members of the APGA, traditional rulers, religious leaders, community leaders, professionals, business leaders, youth organisations, women’s groups and other stakeholders for their support and engagement.
He reaffirmed his commitment to advancing the interests of Anambra South, declaring that the district’s voice remained active in national legislative deliberations.
