From Aloysius Attah, Onitsha
The Anambra State Government has approved the extension of its urban regeneration programme to Upper Iweka, Onitsha, a major gateway into the state.
The Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, Law Mefor, who disclosed this on Tuesday, said the approval was part of the decisions reached at the 17th Meeting of the State Executive Council (ANSEC), held at the Light House, Awka.
He said the remodelling would fundamentally change the aesthetics, functionality and land use of the area, including parks and other public spaces, to reflect the administration’s vision of a liveable and prosperous homeland.
According to him, the detailed master plan and design for the Upper Iweka regeneration project would be unveiled soon.
Mefor further said the Council had directed the Anambra Road Traffic Management Agency (ARTMA) to issue a one-month notice to owners of abandoned vehicles on roads across the state.
“At the expiration of the notice, all such vehicles will be impounded, removed and scrapped by the government.
“This measure is necessary to remove hazards, ease traffic flow and enhance the safety and aesthetics of our roads.
“Government therefore advises all owners of abandoned vehicles to remove them forthwith to avoid forfeiture,” he added.
The Commissioner also disclosed the Council’s approval for the commencement of the selection, placement and training of the third batch of the One Youth, Two Skills (1Youth 2Skills) entrepreneurship programme.
He noted that the Ministry of Youth Development would, in due course, announce details of the eligibility criteria and application modalities.
“It will be recalled that two batches of the programme have been completed, with over 13,000 Anambra youths trained, empowered and mentored in over 60 skill areas.
“Of this number, over 5,000 beneficiaries have become confirmed millionaires and are now training and empowering other youths as part of the programme’s pay-it-forward model.
“The 1Youth 2Skills initiative remains a flagship youth empowerment programme of the Soludo administration aimed at creating a new tribe of skilled, productive and self-reliant youths.”
