Governor Chukwuma Soludo has inaugurated the Torch of Unity Movement in Awka, Anambra State, as part of the build-up to the 22nd National Sports Festival, dubbed the Gateway Games, scheduled to take place in Ogun State from May 16 to May 30, 2025.

During a ceremony at the Government House in Awka, a delegation from the National Sports Commission (NSC) presented the Torch to Governor Soludo, who was represented by Chief Chinedu Nwoye Glamour, the State Chief Protocol.

In his remarks, Governor Soludo commended the NSC for its pivotal role in promoting national peace and unity through sports. He reiterated Anambra State’s dedication to actively participating in the upcoming festival, emphasizing his administration’s commitment to fostering an enabling environment for sports development in the state.

Governor Soludo, while addressing a delegation from National Sports Commission said, “Sports is a unifying force that serves as a catalyst for youth engagement, national cohesion, and economic growth,” he stated. The Governor called on both public and private sectors to contribute to the advancement of sports in Nigeria, focusing on infrastructure expansion, talent identification, athlete nurturing, and the sponsorship of sporting events.

Mr. Patrick Estate Onyedum, Chairman of the Anambra State Sports Development Commission, underscored the significance of enhanced collaboration in harnessing Nigeria’s sporting potential. He noted that the Torch of Unity symbolizes peace, strength, and solidarity and highlighted its journey through all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, heralding the festival.

“This festival provides a platform for all states and the FCT to showcase their sporting prowess through healthy competition, sportsmanship, and friendly interaction, all contributing to the enhancement of national unity,” Onyedum said.

Governor Soludo further articulated the deeper significance of the games, stating, “They represent much more than a showcase of athletic skill; they embody the unity, strength, and resilience that define us as a nation. Every step we take together towards the festival is a reaffirmation of our collective commitment to nation-building through sports.”
