Deputy Governor of Anambra State, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim, has rebuked the personnel of the Nigerian Army stationed at the Amansea axis of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway for allegedly extorting users of the road.
Ibezim was equally angry that the army, in its bid to extort the drivers plying that ever-busy expressway, caused long gridlock on the road thereby causing travellers to spend more time in the traffic.
Commercial drivers plying that expressway have always lamented spending hours in the gridlock caused by the army who, they say, appear more interested in the money they collect from them than concentrating on their security duties.
A trending video showed the deputy governor tongue-lashing the military personnel for deliberately subjecting users of the road to hardship for no reason. The incident happened on Friday.
“I came here in the morning to warn you about this thing. We must be sane in this country. I don’t want you to cause hardship to my people. This nonsense must stop in this country,” the visibly angry deputy governor thundered when he revisited in the evening of the same day.
Ibezim subsequently took over the control of the traffic so that the vehicles, many of which had lined up on the road for too long, could move while he was still there.
