…calls for urgent intervention work

From Jeff Amechi Agbodo, Onitsha

The people of Omor Community in Ayamelum local government area of Anambra State have cried out to federal government to immediately intervene on the collapsed Otuocha-Omor-Adani road to alliviate the suffering of commuters and other road users.

The community leaders and High Chiefs made the call during the meeting of ‘Omor In Focus’ to look what community has achieved in the past, where it is today and what future holds for Omor, part of the traditional ruler’s Ofala festival programme.

The leaders who took their turn to speak at the event called the federal ministry of works through FERMA to immediately start palliative work on the roads especially the collapsed axis of Nando which is impassable now due to sorry state of the road.

The traditional ruler of the community Igwe Dr. Oranu Chris Chidume while harping on the importance of the road said that there was palliative works two years ago by the FERMA which he said has collapsed due to pressure on the road as many vehicles from Benue, Kogi and Enugu states were plying the road to and fro Onitsha.

According to Igwe Chidume, “Ayamelum people will become completely cut off if nothing is urgently done in the next rainy season. We should recall that the federal road Nsugbe-Otuicha-Onor-Adani road has collapsed particularly Nando area. If you are coming from Awka you must take Awuzu-Igbariam road, upon joining the federal road around Ezu bridge to Ekenedilichukwu farm Anaku.

“You will discover that the road which was recently rehabilitated has failed due to the influx of heavy trucks that are diverting from Nsukka-Enugu express road that has also failed. This influx of heavy trucks coming from the North has made the road so deplorable that the attention of the federal government is urgently needed before the rainy season” he stated.

The community also commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for approving the construction of Achara to Omor road and urged him to mobilize contractors to start work before the rainy season.

“Poised by the need for transformation in Anambra state, the current APGA led government has turned the state into a construction site. Most of the roads in the state are currently receiving attention from the state government and we plead with the state government to remember Omor and Ayamelum in the ongoing road construction projects in the state” Igwe appealed.
