Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, has brokered a peace deal between the Aguleri and Umuoba Anam communities following renewed clashes that claimed five lives and led to destruction of property.

Addressing a stakeholders’ meeting, yesterday, in Awka, the governor also ordered an immediate ceasefire and directed security agencies to maintain a round-the-clock presence in the affected areas.

“The loss of lives and destruction of property are unacceptable to this administration. We will not allow lawlessness to continue. Government will remain fair, firm, and committed to ensuring justice and lasting peace,” Soludo said.

The governor condemned the destruction of the traditional palace, describing the attack on the traditional institution as an assault on the heritage of the state. He consequently announced that the state government would assist in rebuilding the palace to restore its traditional dignity.

Soludo also announced the establishment of a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to examine petitions, complaints, and historical grievances relating to the crisis. He said the commission would submit its report within four months.

Also speaking, Igwe Michael Idigo of Aguleri kingdom, condemned the violence, including the killing of a minor and an unarmed person from Umuoba Anam, as well as the destruction of the Idigo Palace.

A community leader, Mr Fidel Okafor, called for an immediate end to hostilities and prosecution of those responsible for the violence.

Retired Justice Charles Okaa, who represented Umueri as an observer, appealed for restraint and urged the state government to enforce the 1982 Supreme Court judgment on the boundary dispute between Umueri and Aguleri.

At the end of the deliberations, the stakeholders agreed on an immediate ceasefire, prosecution of perpetrators, accountability by community leadership, and rebuilding of the destroyed Idigo Palace.

The meeting ended with representatives of the affected communities committing themselves to peace, reconciliation, and harmonious coexistence.

To ensure compliance, the governor directed security agencies to maintain a robust, round-the-clock presence in the affected zones, reassuring all parties that the government remains firm, fair, and uncompromising in its pursuit of lasting peace and justice across the state.
