Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan missed out on the women’s 100m hurdles Diamond League title after finishing fourth in the Brussels final on Saturday.
American Masai Russell claimed the crown in a meet-record 12.20 seconds, while Bahamas’ Devynne Charlton finished second in 12.33 seconds after setting a new national record. Jamaica’s Megan Simmonds took third in a season’s best 12.43 seconds, leaving Amusan fourth in 12.54 seconds.
The Brussels final was particularly significant for Amusan after Russell recently broke the Nigerian’s four-year-old world record. Russell clocked 12.09 seconds in Zurich to lower Amusan’s 12.12-second mark by three-hundredths of a second.
Amusan had entered the final in strong form after winning the Grand Prix Brescia in Italy on August 31. She ran 12.56 seconds despite a stiff headwind, finishing ahead of American Alaysha Johnson and Jamaica’s Ackera Nugent.

The Nigerian had also finished second behind Russell in Zurich, posting a season’s best 12.23 seconds. That result had set up another highly anticipated meeting between the two hurdlers in Brussels.
Amusan remains a three-time Diamond League champion, having won the title in 2021, 2022 and 2023. She became the first Nigerian to hold the women’s 100m hurdles world record when she ran 12.12 seconds in the semi-finals of the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
She later won the world title in Eugene in 12.06 seconds, although the performance could not count as a world record because of an excessive following wind.
