Amusan, Brume, Ezekiel, Ajayi lead 15-Man Team Nigeria to World Championships in Tokyo

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has officially unveiled a 15-athlete team set to represent the country at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, with top names like Oluwatobi Amusan, Ese Brume, Nathaniel Ezekiel, and Kayinsola Ajayi leading the charge.

The 20th edition of the global championships will take place from September 13 to 21 at the Japan National Stadium in Tokyo. Team Nigeria will feature in 11 events spanning sprints, hurdles, jumps, and throws.

Speaking on the final selection, the Secretary General of the AFN, Mr. Israel Inwang, emphasized that all 15 athletes earned their spots based on merit and strict adherence to World Athletics qualification standards.

“We are proud to present a team of athletes who have not only met the global standards but have shown consistency and determination throughout the qualification period,” Inwang said. “This is a team that reflects the future and strength of Nigerian athletics.”

The squad comprises seven female and eight male athletes. Among them are 100m hurdles world record holder, Oluwatobi Amusan; Olympic bronze medalist in long jump, Ese Brume; rising 400m hurdles star, Nathaniel Ezekiel; and veteran shot putter, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi.

Also making the list are Rosemary Chukwuma (100m), Prestina Ochonogor (Long Jump), Chioma Onyekwere Lyons and Obiageri Amaechi (Discus), Oyesade Olatoye (Hammer), Israel Okon and Kayinsola Ajayi (100m), Udodi Onwuzurike (200m), Samuel Ogazi and Chidi Okezie (400m), and Charles Godfred (Long Jump).

Inwang expressed optimism about the team’s chances in Tokyo, noting that the AFN leadership remains committed to the athletes’ preparation and success.

“We are grateful to all stakeholders – coaches, sponsors, and government agencies – for their continuous support,” he said. “The Federation is working on more developmental programmes to ensure that Nigerian athletics not only competes but dominates on the world stage.”

Team Nigeria is expected to depart for Tokyo in the coming days to begin final preparations ahead of the prestigious competition.
