Amnesty International Nigeria has demanded the immediate release of critic, Ibrahim Dallah, a vocal critic in Narasawa State.
In a Monday statement, the human rights group said Dallah has been in detention at the Correctional Centre, Lafia since his arrest in 2025.
Amnesty said the critic’s ordeal stemmed from alleged criticism of the Secretary to the Government of Nasarawa state, Mr. Laraban Shu’aibu Magaji.
The statement reads, “Amnesty International is deeply concerned by the unlawful detention of Kabiru Ibrahim Dallah over alleged criticism of the Secretary to the Government of Nasarawa state Mr. Laraban Shu’aibu Magaji.
“Since his arrest last year, Kabiru Dallah has been in detention at the notorious Lafia Prison — for over 40 days.
“There is a plan to put him through a sham trial based on bogus charges. The ordeal of Kabiru Dallah is a reflection of the wider and increasing impunity and repression by government officials on people who exercise freedom of expression by expressing critical opinions.
“All efforts to secure bail for him have been bizarrely rejected.”
Amnesty argued that Dallah is being held in a deplorable condition “solely to punish him”.
The rights group added, “Kabiru Dallah is a victim of wanton abuse of power and desperate attempt to silence critics.
“He must be immediately and unconditionally released.
“The right of young people to freedom of expression in Nigeria is increasingly threatened.
“A lot of young Nigerians have come attacks, ranging from threats to arrests, illegal detention, and harassment, all for simply expressing their opinions online. This is unacceptable and must end.”
