Amnesty International has strongly condemned the brutal killing of renowned Islamic preacher, Sheikh Yahaya Masussuka in Katsina State.
In a Monday statement posted on Facebook, Amnesty said the cleric was killed by gunmen on motorbikes as he stepped out of his house in Dutsin-Ma to go for his usual evening preaching.
“The Nigerian authorities must immediately and effectively investigate the incident and ensure that those suspected of being responsible are brought to justice,” Amnesty said.
The organisation described Sheik Masussuka as a preacher who consistently used his preaching to promote cooperation, peaceful coexistence, interfaith dialogue and understanding among Muslim faithful, adding that he was notable for preaching against violent extremism and radicalisation.
“The late Islamic cleric faced threats to life and intimidation — all through his life,” Amnesty added.
Meanwhile, the killing has been confirmed by the Katsina State Police Command.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, DSP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, said the attack occurred at about 7:30 pm on Monday, October 26, in front of the scholar’s residence in Dutsin-Ma, when two armed men on a motorcycle opened fire.
The police said Masussuka and his friend, Adamu Abubakar, sustained fatal gunshot injuries and were pronounced dead at the hospital.
Commissioner of Police, CP Ali Umar Fage, announced an investigation into the incident, ordering the deployment of tactical and operational teams to track down the fleeing suspects.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda has also condemned the killing, describing Masussuka as a voice for peaceful coexistence and interfaith harmony.
