When on October 11, 2023, Dr. Aminu Maida was appointed as the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communication Commission, many telecoms industry players saw it as a well deserved appointment given his background as an accomplished technology expert with experience in the telecommunication and payments industries.
In almost three years that he has been in this position, Maida has demonstrated expertise in leading cutting-edge innovations, managing cross-functional teams, and driving growth for businesses in competitive markets.
He came on board, well prepared for the job, with a Ph.D in Electrical & Electronic Engineering from Bath University, UK, a Post-Graduate Diploma in Entrepreneurship from Cambridge Judge Business School as well as a Master’s degree in Information Systems Engineering from Imperial College London.
Before he assumed office at the NCC, he held key positions in prominent organisations, including serving as Executive Director, Technology and Operations at the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement Systems, overseeing the organisation’s day-to-day operations and IT infrastructure; the Chief Technology Officer at ARCA Payments Network, a leading Nigerian FinTech firm, as well as a Lead Consultant at British Telecoms and at the Mobility Group, Cisco Systems in UK.
He has shown commitment to the advancement of technology in the telecommunication and payments sectors, mentoring young professionals, and contributing to research that shapes the future of these industries. His prowess in his chosen career is further illuminated by the numerous patents he holds to his name in the areas of wireless communication and self-organising networks.
At the NCC, he has successfully managed teams of engineers, developers, and researchers, fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment. HIs expertise in strategic planning, business development, technology transformation, and project management has contributed significantly in realising the objectives of the commission.
With the five drivers that underpin his leadership at the NCC – the people he acknowledges as the biggest assets of the Commission; Collaboration; Data-driven decision-making; Compliance and Digitisation – he has distinguished himself as a public servant to reckon with.
It is for these reasons and several others that Dr. Aminu Maida is winner of the Public Service Personality Award 2026.
