…says Ex-VC is most suited for the National assignment
Immediate past branch chairman of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) at the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Comrade Kayode Ojumoola, has lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for nominating Prof. Abayomi Sunday Fasina for the position of a non-career Ambassador and High Commissioner Designate, saying the Ex-Vice-Chancellor of the University is best suited for the job.
In a press statement signed by him and made available to newsmen in Nigeria from the United Kingdom titled: “Ambassadorial Nomination: Professor Fasina, A Round Peg In A Round Hole”, Ojumoola said: “The nomination of Professor Abayomi Sunday Fasina as Nigeria’s Ambassador/High Commissioner Designate is one of those appointments that inspires confidence. It reflects the recognition of merit, competence, intellectual excellence, and proven leadership. It is, without doubt, a fitting example of placing a round peg in a round hole.
“Having had the rare privilege of working closely with Professor Fasina as a Labour Leader during his tenure as the Vice-Chancellor of Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), I witnessed firsthand the qualities that distinguished him as an exceptional administrator, an accomplished scholar, a visionary leader, and a patriot whose commitment to the advancement of Nigeria never wavered. His administration transformed FUOYE into one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing and most sought-after universities. Under his leadership, the institution witnessed remarkable infrastructural development, significant expansion of academic programmes, enhanced research output, and improved learning facilities that elevated the university’s profile nationally and internationally.
“Professor Fasina demonstrated that university administration is not merely about managing an institution but about building enduring structures that will benefit generations yet unborn. His emphasis on quality assurance, academic excellence, staff development, staff and students’ welfare, innovation, and institutional discipline created an environment where excellence became the standard rather than the exception. One of his defining strengths was his unwavering commitment to internationalisation. Understanding that modern education thrives on global partnerships, he relentlessly pursued international collaborations, academic exchanges, and strategic engagements with institutions across the world. Through these initiatives, FUOYE expanded its international visibility and strengthened its global academic footprint.
“Professor Fasina is a scholar of international repute whose academic engagements have taken him to more than 80 countries across the globe. Such extensive international exposure has afforded him a profound understanding of global diplomacy, intercultural engagement, international development, and strategic partnerships. These are invaluable qualities for anyone entrusted with representing Nigeria on the international stage. Beyond his academic accomplishments, Professor Abayomi Sunday Fasina possesses remarkable interpersonal skills. He is approachable, intellectually engaging, diplomatic in his dealings, and firm in decision-making when circumstances demand. His ability to build consensus among diverse groups while remaining focused on institutional goals remains one of his greatest administrative strengths. Throughout his tenure as Vice-Chancellor, he consistently projected Nigeria positively in every international engagement.
“Whether through academic diplomacy, international conferences, collaborative research, or institutional partnerships, he proudly promoted Nigeria’s enormous potential and showcased the country’s intellectual capacity before the global community. These qualities make him exceptionally suited for diplomatic service. The office of an Ambassador or High Commissioner demands sound judgment, strategic thinking, emotional intelligence, effective communication, and the ability to build enduring international relationships. Professor Fasina possesses these attributes in abundance. His nomination therefore goes beyond personal recognition, it is a strategic investment in Nigeria’s diplomatic future. It presents an opportunity for the nation to leverage the experience of a globally respected academic, a tested administrator, and a leader with an extensive international network capable of advancing Nigeria’s interests abroad.
“I therefore commend His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for finding Professor Abayomi Sunday Fasina worthy of this important national assignment. The nomination reflects a commitment to competence and the deployment of experienced Nigerians to positions where they can make meaningful contributions to national development. As Professor Fasina prepares to appear before the distinguished members of the Nigerian Senate for screening and confirmation, I am confident that his wealth of experience, impeccable record of service, and outstanding credentials will speak eloquently for him. I pray that Almighty God grants him divine wisdom, uncommon favour, and a smooth, successful, and hitch-free screening. May his confirmation be swift, and may his diplomatic assignment usher in a new chapter of distinguished service to our beloved nation.
“Nigeria deserves credible ambassadors who can inspire confidence, build strategic partnerships, promote our national interest, and project the true image of our country before the international community. Professor Abayomi Sunday Fasina embodies these qualities. Indeed, his nomination is not only well deserved, it is a decision that holds great promise for Nigeria’s diplomatic service. Congratulations once again to Professor Abayomi Sunday Fasina, Ambassador/High Commissioner Designate. I have every confidence that he will represent Nigeria with distinction, honour, integrity, and excellence.” Comrade Ojumoola stated.
