The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Enugu State Council, has retracted its earlier claims against the member representing Nkanu East/Nkanu West Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Nnolim Nnaji.

The union had on Sunday, in a statement signed by its chairman, Comrade Obinna Ogbuka, accused Nnaji of attacking journalists during the APC primary election coverage in the state.

However, in another statement on Monday, Ogbuka said the earlier press statement was influenced by erroneous information.

According to him, “Late information revealed to us that the Honourable lawmaker did not attack journalists as was erroneously communicated but advised for a space for visibility by the candidates being conducted for their victory at the party primary elections.

“The misunderstanding is highly regretted, while the Council calls on all parties, including journalists, political actors, supporters, and members of the public, to de-escalate and avoid actions or statements capable of increasing further tensions.”

The NUJ chairman further stated that following engagements with the lawmaker and other critical stakeholders, and in the light of fresh information made available to the Council, the misunderstanding surrounding the incident may have stemmed largely from the mode of communication adopted at the venue, heightened emotions, and frayed nerves during the tense moments of the exercise.

“Rt Hon. Nnaji agreed with NUJ Enugu State Council that journalists remain committed professionals carrying out their constitutional responsibilities in the public interest who should at all times be accorded the respect, access, and protection necessary for the discharge of their legitimate duties.

“The Enugu State Council emphasises that the media and public office holders are partners in progress in the collective task of deepening democracy, promoting accountability, and advancing development in society.

“While the Council remains committed to maintaining cordial and professional relationships with individuals and institutions, the Council also appreciates the intervention efforts of the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Enugu State, Martin Chukwunweike, who, the Council learnt, made concerted efforts to contain the situation and ease tensions as events unfolded.

“The NUJ further appreciates the interventions, concerns, and constructive engagements from stakeholders since the incident occurred.

“The Council urges all parties to continue to uphold democratic values, civility, and respect for press freedom in all engagements moving forward,” he further stated.
