The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a fake doctor, Sunday Okon Akpan, who attempted to dump the corpse of a woman, identified as Blessing Sunday Etim, after a failed abortion in his hospital.

According to a statement signed by the Akwa Ibom State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Timfon John, and made available to journalists in Uyo, the fake doctor was intercepted by co-tenants of the deceased when he attempted to drop the corpse in her room and bolted away.

John said the fake doctor, who is also the employer of the deceased, succeeded in dumping the corpse, but the incident was reported by a woman stating that Blessing went to work at Full Life Medical Centre, Ikot Obio Odong Village, in Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area of the state before the fake doctor was arrested.

The statement reads in part:

“On Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at approximately 0930 hours, a man was arrested on suspicion of conducting an illegal abortion that resulted in the death of a 35-year-old woman.

“The arrest followed a report made by a woman (name withheld) who stated that her daughter, Blessing Sunday Etim, had gone to work at Full Life Medical Centre in Ikot Obio Odong village, Ibesikpo Asutan.

“According to a co-tenant, the victim’s employer, a man who identified himself as Dr Sunday Okon Akpan, attempted to secretly enter the deceased’s room to dump her body.”

John said when the suspect was confronted, he dropped the corpse and fled the scene of the incident, leaving the corpse at the doorstep of the deceased.

“Upon arrival, detectives observed a premature foetus exiting the victim’s private part. A subsequent investigation led to the arrest of the suspect, Sunday Okon Akpan, a resident of Afaha Offiong village in Nsit Ibom.”

The Police Spokesperson said investigations revealed that the victim died from an illegal abortion performed by the suspect in his hospital.

“Further inquiries exposed that the suspect, who owns and operates the Full Life Medical Centre, is not a licensed medical doctor or a nurse, but rather a community health practitioner.

“It is believed that he used the facility to perform illegal medical services and abortions.”

She said the health facility has been abandoned as all the staff have fled.

“The health centre had since been found deserted.

“The body of the deceased has been deposited at a morgue for preservation and an autopsy as investigation continues.”
