Senate President Godswill Akpabio has been charged to confirm the appointment of Abdullahi Garba Ramat as Chairman, Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

The call was made by the South-South Guardian Forum (SSGF), in a statement at the weekend.

SSGF Spokesperson, Andrew Odigwe, in a statement yesterday, said: “We, the citizens of Nigeria, demand that the Senate President act swiftly to confirm Engr. Ramat as NERC Chairman. The delay is unjustifiable and raises suspicions about the intentions of those behind it.”

Odigwe urged Akpabio and all those in charge to respect the democratic process and allow Ramat to take over the office, bringing his expertise and experience to bear on the nation’s electricity sector.

According to him, the delay is not only unconstitutional but also detrimental to the nation’s economic growth and development.

The spokesperson claimed that Ramat’s wealth of experience and expertise in the field of electricity would be invaluable in addressing the challenges facing the sector.

“His appointment has been approved by the Senate, and it is time for him to take the helm and work towards improving the nation’s electricity supply,” he added.

Also, he called on Nigerians to join them in demanding the inauguration of Ramat, saying that his leadership would bring much-needed reforms and progress to the electricity sector.

“Engr. Ramat’s appointment has been thoroughly vetted and approved by the Senate committee on power. There is no valid reason for the delay. We call on the Senate President to prioritise the nation’s interests and inaugurate Engr. Ramat without further delay,” he emphasised.
