Applause has continued to pour in for the Super Eagles for winning the bronze medal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
In separate reactions, Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr Peter Obi, Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Amadin Desmond Enabulele, congratulated the national team for securing the third-place medal.
The Super Eagles had defeated Egypt 4-2 on penalties, to claim bronze at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Casablanca.
The third-place match ended goalless after regulation time, forcing a penalty shootout to decide the winner as goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali emerged Nigeria’s hero.
Nwabali produced two outstanding saves to deny Egypt’s star men, Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush, to secure the podium finish for the Eagles.
Akpabio described the achievement as a source of inspiration to Nigerians.
“On behalf of my family, constituents and the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to the Super Eagles on their outstanding achievement in securing the bronze medal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.”
The Senate President praised the team’s performance in the third-place match against Egypt, noting that it demonstrated skill, determination and resilience.
The match against the Pharaohs of Egypt was a testament to your skills and determination, and I commend you for your exceptional performance.” Akpabio stated that the victory reflects the depth of talent Nigeria is known for and underscores the country’s strong presence on the international sporting stage, “a reflection of the talent and resilience that Nigeria is known for, and we are proud to have you represent our country on the international stage.”
Akpabio urged the players to build on the achievement and aim for greater success in future competitions, stressing that their performance would motivate Nigerians across the country “to strive for even greater heights in your future endeavour.

According to Obi, the Eagles fought with character, represented Nigeria with honour, and reminded us that progress is built through perseverance.

Similarly, the Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Amadin Desmond Enabulele, described the achievement as a proud moment for the nation and a strong statement of character by the team.
Enabulele praised the team for ending the tournament on a high note, highlighting their resilience, discipline, and mental strength in the tense third-place encounter against Egypt. He said the team’s performance, particularly in the face of stiff Egyptian resistance, reflected the true Nigerian spirit of determination and belief. He commended the technical crew led by Coach Eric Chelle for their tactical awareness, singling out the impact of key substitutions that injected renewed energy into the game, as well as the composure displayed during the penalty shootout.
Enabulele also applauded goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, the man of the match for his decisive role from the spot, noting that such performances underscore the depth of quality and mental toughness within the squad.
