Former Senator for Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani has expressed support for United States-Nigeria military cooperation that led to airstrikes against terror targets in Nigeria but warned the country could not forever depend on foreign help to combat the menace of terrorism.

US President Donald Trump announced military airstrikes against terrorists in Nigeria in a social media post early Friday.

Confirming the development in a statement, the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the airstrikes were a result of military cooperation between both nations.

Spokesman of the ministry, Kimiebi Ebienfa noted that the Nigerian government remains engaged in “structured security cooperation with international partners, including the United States of America,” to address terrorism and violent extremism in the country.

According to the ministry, the collaboration, which led to precision airstrikes on terrorist targets, involves intelligence sharing, strategic coordination and other forms of support in line with international law, respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty and shared security commitments.

Reacting, Sani praised the collaboration while condemning the nefarious activities of terrorists in Nigeria.

However, he said Nigerian authorities must realise relying on foreign entities to win the war on terror is not sustainable.

He said, “If actually the military strikes against the terrorists targets in the North Western part of Nigeria were a joint operation with the ‘Nigerian Authorities’ as posted by the US AFRICOM on their verified X handle, then it’s a conscionable action.

“Terrorists have become cancerous cells in our part of the country. They live by the sword.

“The narrative that the evil terrorists only targets one faith, remains absolutely false and misleading.

“Again, the ultimate security and peace in our country lies with ourselves and not with the US or any foreign power.

“They can complimentarily or unilaterally strike, but they can’t eternally fight our battles.”
