The Comptroller-General, Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Bashir Adeniyi, has acknowledged that the deployment of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is already yielding result with the reshaping of public governance architecture.

Adeniyi, who was guest speaker at the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ) stated that Nigeria must learn from global examples and adapt to our unique context in deploying AI to address specific challenges.

“AI is not just enhancing government operations but fundamentally reshaping public governance architecture. This transformation presents unprecedented opportunities, while raising profound challenges that must be addressed for these technologies to serve the public good.”

Adeniyi, who spoke on “AI in Public Governance”, said the projected AI market in 2030 for seven countries, UK, Estonia, Singapore, United Arab Emirates, Nigeria, South Africa and Kenya at $16.53billion at an annual growth of 24.4 percent.

According to him, the African Union is working to develop a continental approach based on existing digital framework while adapting to local realities, Africa diversity, language, cultural heritage, and unique contexts.

The custom comptroller argued that the potential for AI to exacerbate digital divides presents some concern for Africa as many nations lack access to technology, data remains expensive and internet connectivity variable, affecting developers and entrepreneurs.
