A member of the House Committee on Electoral Affairs, Hon. Fred Agbedi, has praised opposition lawmakers for their attitude on the matter of real-time transmission of election results during the boisterous House of Representatives plenary session.

Agbedi commended the opposition for taking what he called a principled stance in support of Nigeria’s democratic process in his remarks following the contentious debate.

“Well done, opposition. I was proud of them. They gave it their all. They stood for doing the right thing and for Nigeria and Nigerians,” he remarked.

He made the commendation on the Tuesday edition of Channels TV’s Politics Today

As part of the ongoing debate on the Electoral Act, the session focused on suggestions about the electronic and real-time transmission of election results, which was accompanied by raised voices and arguments over procedural matters.

Legislators disagreed on whether or not electronic transmission should be required, as well as what precautions should be taken in the event of technological difficulties.

Agbedi pointed out that although parliamentary democracy involves conflicts, the fervour of the discussion highlighted how important election changes are to Nigeria’s democratic future.

Strengthening the electoral process’s integrity, transparency, and public trust should continue to be the major priorities, he insisted.
