A Federal High Court in Kano presided by Justice Simon A. Amobeda has again declined an application seeking to stop the conduct of the Kano State local government elections slated for October 26.
The refusal followed an application filed by the NNPP and Muhammad Babayo against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Kano State Independent Electoral Commission KSIEC), Inspector General of Police and Director General, Department of State Service (DSS).
The plaintiffs had asked the court to halt the election pending the hearing and determination of a motion on notice. They also asked the to direct both sides of the parties in the case to maintain the status quo, pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.
Justice Amobeda, having listened to Dalhatu Shehu Usman and Ibrahim Salihu Paki, counsels to the plaintiffs, however, directed that the respondents should urgently be put on notice to show cause why these prayers should not be granted.
The judge also ordered that the hearing of the suit be abridged to 72 hours from the date of the service of the order of the court and the processes while ordering that the time of filing of all other subsequent processes by the parties be abridged to 48 hours from the service of the same.
He subsequently adjourned to October 16, 2024.
The same court had similarly refused an application by Aminu Aliyu Tilga and the All Progressives Congress (APC) seeking to stop the conduct of the local government elections by the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission.
