Afrocentrism by Midetush is a love letter to the modern African man

There’s something undeniably personal about Afrocentrism. Midetush doesn’t just design clothes — he reflects identities.

And in this debut collection shown at Leicester Fashion Week, he gives voice to a kind of African masculinity that rarely gets to be seen on a runway: grounded, sensitive, proud.

Each look in Afrocentrism feels like a story stitched from memory — of soil-stained feet, fishing lines cast at dawn, wrappers tied around waistlines during village ceremonies. But it’s not a costume.

These aren’t throwbacks. They’re reinterpretations. A brown net layered over wide-leg trousers becomes a symbol of resilience. A red Aso-Oke bomber jacket reads less like fashion and more like armor — cultural and emotional.

There’s elegance in this collection, yes, but also a quiet strength. A knowingness. You get the sense that these pieces weren’t just made — they were remembered. They honour the kind of man who walks with legacy on his shoulders but still wants to move through the world on his own terms.

In a world where African fashion is often reduced to spectacle, Midetush does something far more radical: he centres the person. And in doing so, Afrocentrism becomes more than a collection — it becomes a mirror.
