Kolawole’s victory comes just hours after Christianah Ogunsanya clinched Nigeria’s first gold in the 53kg division, marking a brilliant start for Team Nigeria on Day 1 of the prestigious continental tournament.
Esther Kolawole had earlier showcased her world-class form with a technical 10-0 victory over Senegal’s Safietou Goudialy in the preliminary round. She brought that same fire into the final, outclassing her opponent to stand atop the podium

Christianah Ogunsanya, who earlier defeated Morocco’s Zineb Chabki with a dominant 10-0 victory in the semi-finals, carried her winning form into the final bout, where she secured gold and made a strong statement for Team Nigeria. The victory marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s campaign at the continental tournament, which began earlier today with several athletes in action.
The African Wrestling Championships, which gather elite talent from across the continent, have just begun, and Nigeria’s early performances signal a promising outing. More athletes from the Nigerian delegation are scheduled to compete throughout the championship.
