Team Nigeria finished 4th in the overall medal table after conclusion of 24th African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra Ghana yesterday.
The Nigerian contingent rounded off their campaign on the final day with gold in the women’s 4x400m relay.
The quartet of Esther Okon, Toheebat Jimoh, Jecinter Lawrence and Patience Okon-George clocked a time of 3mins 29:25secs to bring home the gold medal in emphatic fashion.
The Nigerian ladies blew out the field, finishing about 30 metres ahead of Ethiopia in 2nd place and Kenya in 3rd.
The win makes it Nigeria’s fourth gold overall in the championships.
World record-holder Tobi Amusan set the golden tone by claiming the women 100m Hurdles title in 12.83 seconds.
The Nigerian quartet of Rosemary Nwankwo, Obi Jennifer Chukwuka, Rosemary Chukwuma and Miracle Ezechukwu combined to clock 42.94 seconds to win another gold for the country in 4X100M relay.
Nigeria finished with 4 gold 5 silver and 3 bronze totalling 12 medals to finish 4th in the final medal standings.
Kenya topped the table with 6 gold, 4 silver and 7 bronze medals, South Africa finished in second spot with 6 gold, 2 silver and 6 bronze while Ethiopia came in third with 5 gold, 4 silver and 6 bronze.
Botswana will host the next edition of the African Senior Athletics Championships in 2028.
