The pan-Yoruba sociocultural organisation, Afenifere, has mourned the passing of Chief Cornelius Olatunji Adebayo, describing him as a committed Awoist, patriotic statesman, and an icon whose life was dedicated to service across various spheres of national development.
Chief Adebayo died on Wednesday, June 25, after a brief illness.
In a heartfelt statement jointly signed by the Afenifere leader, Oba Oladipo Olaitan, and the group’s National Publicity Secretary, Prince Justice Faloye, Afenifere expressed deep sorrow over the loss, while celebrating the remarkable legacy of a man who remained loyal to progressive ideals throughout his lifetime.
“Chief Cornelius Adebayo was a true comrade of the Obafemi Awolowo political family and a man whose life was wholly devoted to humanity,” the statement read. Afenifere described him as a multidisciplinary figure who had made notable contributions as a university lecturer, senator, governor, minister, and vocal advocate for the restructuring of Nigeria.
As Governor of the old Kwara State, Minister of Communications, and Senator of the Federal Republic, Adebayo had played key roles in shaping policy and promoting national unity. A strong advocate for federalism, he used every platform available to push for a Nigeria rooted in justice, fairness, and regional autonomy.
Afenifere noted his work with several prominent organisations, the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), the Middle Belt Forum, and the Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum and demonstrated commitment to democratic ideals and national transformation.
According to the group, Chief Adebayo remained unwavering in his loyalty to Awoist principles and the dream of a restructured Nigeria.
