Nigeria football fans eager to know the 28-man Super Eagles squad for the African Nations Cup in Morocco will have to wait until Thursday, 11th December, 2025.
This is according to the Director of Communication, Dr Ademola Olajire when contacted on the matter Tuesday evening.
Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle had earlier announced a 54-man preliminary squad for the 2025 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations, signaling fierce competition for places as the Super Eagles prepare for this month’s tournament in Morocco.
The Franco-Malian manager had opted for depth across every position, inviting established internationals, long-term absentees and a wave of newcomers as he assesses his final options.
Under CAF regulations, Chelle must reduce the group to a maximum of 28 players before the tournament begins on 21 December.
Nigeria, runners-up in Ivory Coast last year and seeking their first continental title since 2013, will compete in Group D alongside Tunisia, Uganda and Tanzania.
Nigeria’s extended list features 6 goalkeepers, 13 defenders, 12 midfielders and 23 forwards, one of the largest preliminary squads the country has ever named for an AFCON campaign.
Meanwhile SCORENigeria has gathered that Trabzonspor striker Paul Onuachu is expected to be recalled by the Super Eagles for the 2025 AFCON, which kicks off later this month in Morocco.
Coach Eric Chelle sees Onauchu as a good option for the injury-prone Victor Osimhen after younger strikers failed to fire at last month’s World Cup Playoffs in Morocco.
Onuachu is the leading scorer in the Turkish Super Lig with 11 goals.
He last featured for the Super Eagles in June 2024 in a 2026 World Cup qualifier against Benin in Abidjan.
He was also drafted as a late replacement for the 2023 AFCON.
Critics said the giant striker has failed to bring his goals from his club to the national team.
