Super Eagles coach, Jose Peseiro is sticking with Francis Uzoho as the team’s first choice goalkeeper for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire, SportingSun has gathered.
Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president, Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau stated at a media parley in Lagos before the team jetted out to Abidjan on Tuesday that it took persuasion for the Portuguese coach to accept to invite Chippa United of South Africa goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabili for the Africa football showpiece.
“On the goalkeeping problem of the Super Eagles, we are concerned as most Nigerians but the coach has the final say. He kept insisting that he has confidence in Uzoho,” the NFF president declares.
Alhaji Gusau stated that it took serious persuasion for Peseiro to invite Nwabili and Ojo Olorunleleke.
“The coach initially wanted the goalkeeper from Israel, Adebayo Adeleye, who plays for Israeli Premier League club, Hapoel Jerusalem but we had to plead with him to look inward and that was how Ojo made the team.
“On Nwabili, he initially was not interested until we pleaded with him to check him out. After some days, he requested we arrange for him to watch him in the South African league and I quickly arranged for his ticket. That was how Nwabili was invited,” the NFF boss said.
