Adeolu Ogunmilade Shares insights on role of social media in shaping music stars

Media expert, Adeolu Ogunmilade, has said that social media has truly changed the game for Nigeria’s music artists and fans. Platforms like Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, and YouTube have knocked down the barriers that used to keep new musicians out of the limelight.

There’s no need to back up big record labels or get on television or radio just to be heard, although one cannot deny the influence of the big record labels. Musicians can directly share their music with the world, building a fanbase from their living rooms. He noted that “social media is more than just a platform for sharing tunes. It’s a space where artists can share the real stories behind their music, everyday lives, and true thoughts, even dispelling rumours.

This level of transparency brings artists and fans closer together, fostering a sense of community akin to a large online family. It’s about being authentic and allowing fans to see the person behind the music, not just the persona. This builds trust and allows artists to shape their public image to be more in tune with who they really are, fostering a deeper connection with their fans.” He added: “And there’s a practical side, too. With all these followers, Nigerian music stars can now make a decent living in new and exciting ways.

They have become influencers, partnering with brands and selling merch, tickets, and unique content directly to their fans. This diverse mix of income not only helps artists sustain their passion but also allows them to expand their brand beyond just songs and albums. This financial potential is a promising sign for the future of the music industry, offering new avenues for revenue and growth and a beacon of hope for the industry’s prosperity.

“However, being in the social media spotlight isn’t always a walk in the park. Artists often deal with online abuse, constant scrutiny, and the pressure to maintain appearances. False rumours can spread like wildfire, damaging reputations overnight. So, while social media opens up fantastic opportunities, artists must be resilient, genuine, and savvy about navigating the online world.

“In short, social media has become deeply entwined with Nigeria’s music scene, creating unique opportunities for artists to connect and grow. But it also brings the challenges of living in the public eye to the forefront, reminding artists of the need to balance their online presence with their true selves.”
